Atlantic Provincial Football Associations Unveil Shift to 9-a-Side Competition and Realigned U15 / U18 Age Divisions
September 22, 2026 — After a decade of the Atlantic Bowl’s existence, Football Nova Scotia, Football New Brunswick, Football PEI, and Football Newfoundland and Labrador have officially announced major structural changes for the annual regional championship, the Atlantic Bowl, effective for the 2027 season.
Since its inception in 2017, the Atlantic Bowl has served as a marquee competitive showcase for Atlantic Canada’s elite young football talent.
After reviewing the current structure the following changes will come into effect:
Player Format Expansion: The tournament will officially grow from its traditional 6-aside setup to a 9-a-side tackle football format.
Roster limits increased from 22 to 28 players
Realigned Age Divisions: Age brackets will shift from U16 and U18 to Under-15 (U15) and Under-18 (U18).
Strategic Vision & Development Impact: The shift to 9-a-side football represents a strategic bridge between 6 a-side games and standard 12-a-side football. By moving to 9-a-side, athletes will experience realistic offensive and defensive line play and standard coverage schemes.
Furthermore, realigning the younger age division from U16 to U15 fills a critical developmental gap in high performance pathways better preparing athletes for their community and school competitions. Also, an earlier entry age provides a seamless progression for athletes transitioning from grassroots programs into elite provincial team environments.
Looking Ahead to 2027 The 2027 Atlantic bowl will be hosted in New Brunswick. Details regarding location and schedule will be released in early 2027.
